So I have a hobby that I do about once a month now for the last 3 or 4 months. It’s ROLLER SKATING! I’m good going forward, need tons of improvement going backwards, and can’t wait till I’m doing spins like the regulars do!!! I love going roller skating. It’s a workout, it’s meditative, music plays, and you can think about everything under the sun or nothing at all. I don’t feel an obligation to chat with anyone, although I’m starting to have a special affinity for all the great skaters, because they love to teach and share what they know. So tonight I made a pact with myself to try new things and most importantly to not be afraid to fall. I said to myself “If you don’t fall, you’ll never get better, and you have no chance of ever flipping around and doing cool tricks with your skates”. So tonight I fell twice. I learned two things about myself. I fall graceful and gymnast like and once I give myself permission to not be perfect I open myself up to learning (growth). Tonight I became a better skater. I have a extremely long way to go, but I improved! I then began to think about my choice to tell myself not to be afraid of falling and how important that was. Had I not said that to myself, I still would have had an amazing evening… but I would have just skated around without learning more about my body,my abilities, my tendencies and the art of skating. It also opened something up for others around me. Suddenly all the great skaters started sharing their knowledge with me. I had one skater who every 5 songs would give me a new move to work on which would start training my muscles and body to skate more gracefully. It’s amazing to me, how a simple declaration to yourself not only opens you up to new possibilities, but it becomes like a magnet, attracting people to you. People love to share their knowledge and wisdom to those who will receive it.
So my evening of ROLLER SKATING not only left me with a smile on my face. It gave me a very strong message for my life going forward.
***To wake up every day and say to myself “Don’t be afraid to fall”. I will be open to not knowing it all, to not having all the answers, to knowing I can always be better. I will take the lessons of others with gratitude and grace.***
What hobby in your life do you have that has taught you or reminds you of the beautiful facts of life? I’d love to hear them…I think it’s so cool that those things we just enjoy doing can actually remind us of life’s oh so important lessons and I’d love to hear about them!! If you don’t want to share a hobby and it’s life lesson for you… How about share what song you think would be most fun to skate to?!!??
